Heraklion Eat & Drink Walking Tour

Heraklion Eat & Drink Walking Tour

Discover the city of Heraklion with a delicious journey through its streets!

The different civilisations that passed through the capital of this island, left their mark, still visible today. The local gastronomy is not an exception. Together we will discover the modern aspects of the Cretan Diet and how deeply it is connected to the history of our town.

Just as genuine Heraklioteans do, we will begin our day with a cup of coffee. We will walk through the central market and arrive at one of Heraklion’s oldest coffee grinding shops. There we will talk about Greek coffee, from blending and roasting the beans, to the method of brewing and serving. We will make our own cup of coffee and we will enjoy it while taking in the activity and flow of the central market.

The next stop is to a traditional bakery at the top of the market. There we will talk about the particularities of the Cretan bakery and after a short demonstration we will try some traditional products.

In everyone’s fridge here in Heraklion, there is always cheese. So, we are going to continue with a visit to a family artisan cheesemongers. The owners-cheese makers will welcome us with a variety of Cretan cheese to taste and they will talk to us about the various ways each one is produced.

After our snack it’s time for a herbal infusion. In the Herb shop we will talk about Crete’s unique herbs and spices and their various and important therapeutic attributes.

How about some wine, some fish and some sea? As we’re approaching lunch time it is time to head towards the Heraklion port. With a view to the Cretan Sea we will savour some fresh deep fried fish and we will talk about the different kinds of fish in the area and the angling methods. We will accompany our fresh fish tasting with 3 different chilled white wines.

After so much food and drink it is time to… have lunch! At a sea-side fish restaurant with views to the Aegean Sea, we will savour the fruits of the sea and soak up some Cretan Sun.
